Hon. (Mrs) Gloria Nzonfuo mni. Calling All Byelsans To Register All New Born Babies

The Hon. Federal Commissioner representing Bayelsa State in the National Population Commission Hon. (Mrs) Gloria Izonfuo mni. has called on all Bayelsans, wherever they are, to come out and register all their births.

Hon. (Mrs) Gloria Izonfuo mni. made the call while speaking at press conference organised by the Commissioner for Health to flag-off first round of this year’s Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) week in Yenagoa yesterday.

The Hon. Federal Commissioner said that Birth Registrars of the National Population Commission would go alongside health workers to register all births that have not been registered so far. According to her, the Commission have had a lot of problems getting to all the nooks and crannies, but with the collaboration that the Commission have with the Ministry of Health right now, we have staff from the Ministry of Health that are helping the National Population Commission.

Mrs. Izonfuo also disclosed that the exercise is supposed to register births and deaths, but our people are not well informed to register deaths, stressing that the most essential thing now is for us to register our births. She therefore, advised all Bayelsans to use this opportunity to come out and register our births in all the local governments and wards in the state.

Earlier in his address at the press conference, the Hon. Commissioner for Health, Prof. Ebitimitula Nicholas Etebu said that the Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) week scheduled to hold from 14th July 2017 is a week-long event organized to deliver integrated, high impact, low cost, result oriented, effective, preventive and creative health care services.

Prof. Etebu said further that the programme also serves the strengthened routine services delivered at the health facilities; and it’s a simple one-time delivery mechanism which consolidates facility-based outreach services at the state, local government area and ward levels.

The Hon. Commissioner for Health also said that the impact of the programme is geared towards shoring up maternal and child health indices in the areas of intervention embarked upon, stressing that the intervention embarked upon during this week include:

(1) Vitamin A supplementation in children

(2) Deworming of children using Avendazole

(3) Nutritional assessment of children using mid upper arm circumference Steven

(4) Iron foliage supplementation for pregnant women

(5) Routine immunization – children, women of child bearing age and pregnant women

(6) Birth Registration

(7) Intermittent treatment of malaria in pregnant women

(10) Production of reproductive health services, especially family planning and planning services.

While giving reasons for the intervention, the Hon.
