YENAGOA - In a bid to encourage tertiary education and reduce the financial burden of students in his constituency, the Senator Representing Bayelsa Central Senatorial District, Emmanuel Paulker, on Monday, gave N50000 subvention each to 30 students across the three Local Government Areas that make up the senatorial district.

Paulker, while handing the envelopes to beneficiaries in Yenagoa, noted that there is no political attachment to it, but a mere subvention to assist students who are yet to pay school fees in their various institutions.

Represented by the Dean, Faculty of Arts, Niger Delta University, Prof. Neto Eseimokumo, the senator hinted his desire to continue the gesture, only if the affected students use the money to offset their bills at school.

"This is just like an introduction to what I want to do. It is not going to be the last, if the students use the money for the purpose it is meant for.

"I know N50000 will not be enough, but go and use it to offset whatever bill you may have at hand," he said.

Paulker commended the student leadership in the senatorial district, comprising Southern Ijaw, Yenagoa and Kolokuma Opokuma LGAs for keeping him abreast of the plight of students in the district and also coordinating the whole process effectively, Mangrove Pen gathered.

"I however want you to be committed to your studies. Don't allow unionism to make you forget the fact that you are in school to attain knowledge," Paulker advised.

Giving his vote of thanks, the Central Coordinator of the programme, Comr. Profit Taylor extolled the senator for the kind gesture and pleaded for its continuation.

Taylor, who is also the Deputy Senate president of the 20th Senate council  National Union of Bayelsa State Students (NUBSS), urged other federal lawmakers from the state to follow the good steps of Paulker.

He added that "There are some brilliant students who need money to buy Jamb forms, but are unable to purchase. Let us not allow them to become wayward because of lack of help."

While bemoaning the inability of the Bayelsa State Government to pay bursary to students, Taylor averred that "the Dickson-led government has neglected the tertiary level of education and paid much attention to only the secondary level of education."

One of the beneficiaries, Comr. Doupamo Duabofa Smith thanked the senator for the subvention and enjoined other leaders to copy his footsteps and do more for the district.
